Yes, people are actually applying to companies using a TikTok video — and we’re talkin’ big name companies, too!

But first things first…

What is a TikTok resume?

Well it’s essentially a video resume. This type of resume is perfect if you’re applying for a job in modern industries like social media marketing, graphic design, influencer marketing, and fashion because you can showcase your skills while also applying for the job.

Due to the rise of the TikTok app, the company launched a new TikTok resumes feature so that you can use TikTok to apply for jobs.

While their pilot program where one could apply to jobs directly via the TikTok website has expired, TikTok isn’t the only company you might want to use this type of resume to apply to. By showing your personality and creativity through a quick TikTok video, you’ll be able to stand out amongst the crowd in many different industries & roles.

Here’s how to create an effective TikTok resume.

How to create a TikTok resume

Making a TikTok resume can be very quick & easy… and honestly, super fun! Just follow these steps:

Step 1: Set up a professional TikTok profile

If you don’t have a TikTok profile already, get one! And if you’ve been using TikTok to post weird trends or videos that you don’t want people from your hometown to see, you might want to create a new “professional” profile.

On your job-hunting TikTok account, you’ll want to have a professional profile photo and video to show hiring managers you’re serious about the job opportunity. For your profile photo, pick a professional headshot. Something similar to your LinkedIn profile photo would be perfect.

For the first video on your profile (that you can pin to the top), film a short (30–60 s) clip that highlights your biggest accomplishments and overall professional experience. You don’t need to target a specific job for this video, think of it as a general introduction or master resume that you’d post on LinkedIn for recruiters to browse.

Onomy tip: Keep in mind that you don’t have to film the entire TikTok resume in one take. The app allows you to cut together different takes of the video, so you don’t need to have each chunk completely memorized! Plus, utilizing some transitions and cuts can help keep the video moving along in an interesting way.

Step 2: Make your TikTok resume look professional

Record your video in a professional setting where you won’t be interrupted by other people or loud noises. Examples include:

  • behind a desk
  • in front of a whiteboard (you can add charts and infographics digitally later)
  • in a private room that perhaps has a bookshelf in the background

You’ll also want to dress based on the industry you are looking to be hired in. Maybe that’s a suit and tie or maybe it’s a nice sweater and jeans. Whatever you decide makes the most sense, make sure the outfit makes you feel comfortable and confident on camera.

Step 3: Highlight your relevant achievements & qualifications first

Just like a paper or digital resume, a TikTok resume should begin with your biggest and best career accomplishments. If you’re a recent graduate, you can highlight your university accomplishments, internship highlights or things you were involved in on campus.

On a TikTok resume, you need to grab the viewer’s attention right away the same way you would with the first sentence of a cover letter or your traditional resume summary. Here’s an example of what you can say in your TikTok resume:

“Hello, my name is Dua Lipa. I believe I’d be a great fit for the TikTok Marketing Specialist position at Duo Lingo because in my current role, I increased downloads by 45% in just three months by introducing a new marketing strategy.”

Onomy Tip: See how this intro has a specific example of numbers & results? Using data provides context to your resume skills and achievements, so use them whenever you can!

Step 4: Talk about YOU!

After you’ve summarized your biggest accomplishments and relevant experience at the beginning of your TikTok resume, you can give a quick summary of who you are as a person and why you’d be a great fit for the role.

These details can be tied to your soft skills like public speaking, meeting deadlines, attention to detail etc. If you have some numbers and data to relate here, that’s great! If not, you can talk about your passion for the type of work and what types of things you’d love to contribute to the company.

This is also where you’ll want to mention if you have any specific certifications that are required or would help you be successful in the role. Similarly, if the job listing requires a certain skills like Adobe Photoshop or SQL, or Microsoft Excel talk about your proficiency and experience with those relevant tools.

Onomy Tip: Use some of TikTok’s visual elements like stickers & text on screen to help move your story along and give the hiring manager something to look at while they’re watching your video.

Here’s a great example of a TikTok Resume that does this!

Step 5: End your TikTok Resume with a specific call to action

This is how you should end your TikTok resume once you’ve talked through your relevant experience and qualifications:

  1. reiterate your interest
  2. provide your availability for an interview
  3. show the hiring manager where to find your contact details (and portfolio if you have one)

For example, you could say—

“Again, I believe I’d make a great social media coordinator at [Company Name]. I’d love to speak with you at any time about this opportunity. You can get in touch with me at [email address]. I look forward to hearing back from you!”

Make sure you put your email address or portfolio link as visual elements of the TikTok!

Onomy Tip: If you decide to add your email or phone number to a TikTok video, you can change the view settings so only the people you want can view your TikTok resume. You can also simply download the video after you post it and attach the file to any application or email you sent to a hiring manager.

Step 6: Add your (traditional) resume and cover letter to the application & send!

If the role did not specifically ask for a TikTok resume, you’ll want to make sure you attach your traditional resume and cover letter. Need a great resume template? We got you.

Once your application is ready, it’s time to send it! We recommend sending an email or LinkedIn message that greets the hiring manager, introduces yourself, and say that you’ve attached your resume, TikTok resume, and cover letter. Good luck!
