conquering credit & credit cards

Learn how building credit can also lead to better credit cards, which can mean free hotels, flights, and awesome stuff from your favorite brands thanks to stacking up credit card points.

overview

There are multiple types of credit card rewards you can earn. Most commonly, cash back and some type of credit card points are rewarded for making different types of purchases. Let’s check out how you can get free money and other awesome stuff :).

Cash back

With cash back cards, it’s basically what it sounds like. You get cash back with every purchase. For example, if your card offers 2% cash back, you’ll be getting $2 back for every $100 you spend.

Rewards points

  • With rewards points cards, you can get all sorts of fun stuff. Most rewards cards will give you some sort of currency that you can exchange. These can be points, they can be airline miles, and more, and you can get them on every purchase.
  • Some cards will give you more benefits for spending on certain things. For example, a card may offer 2x or 3x points when you spend on food and travel, or airline cards might give you double miles when you buy plane tickets.
  • The options that you can exchange rewards points for vary, but you can get bonuses in many cases. For example, some cards offer 50% more value when you redeem your rewards points for travel. And, sometimes you can exchange your rewards for gift cards to your favorite brands or even goods from companies like Apple.

Moving up the ladder with your cards and getting better benefits as you go

Typically, it takes building good credit to get some of the fancy cards with the best benefits. A lot of the “entry level” cards have pretty basic benefits, but it’s enough to give you a taste of what’s to come.

Over time, you’ll have access to more and more options. But, be sure to do your research, because some of the cards with better benefits can also have higher annual fees. In the end, free food, free vacations, and free… lots of stuff. It’s waiting for you when your credit gets good!
